Dear First Grade Parents,

Next week your child will begin taking spelling tests every Friday unless otherwise indicated in our newsletter. Our first spelling test will be given on Friday, October 7th. The spelling words will go home every Friday along with the reading words for the week. The reading words will be tested orally and the spelling tests will be written. The spelling tests will consist of ten words. The words will be based on phonics, sight and story words. Please practice these spelling and reading words nightly.

Please continue to read or have your child read to you for 15 minutes five nights a week. Please see the  letter sent home regarding  a Pizza Hut reading incentive program. This is mandatory for all first graders to ensure reading is being done as part of the nightly homework. The Pizza Hut log is sent home at the beginning of the month and must be returned at the end of the month. Please fill out the date and time on each pizza slice crust. A total of an hour and fifteen minutes of reading per week is required for first grade. Your child will receive a free personal pan pizza certificate at the end of the month when the reading log is returned. Please keep your log in a safe place throughout the duration of the month. This program will go through March.

Specials:

*Monday: Computers/Spanish
*Tuesday: Gym and computers (please send your child wearing their gym uniform and gym shoes)
*Wednesday: Music/Computers
*Thursday: Gym/Computers (please send your child wearing their gym uniform and gym shoes)

Lunch
Unlike Kindergarten, there will be NO snack offered to the children in the morning. In the past, there have been problems with the first graders not finishing their lunch due to snacks. Please remember to pack a healthy lunch and drink for your child on Monday August 29th, which is our first full day of school.

Recess
The children will have daily recess beginning at 12:10. Recess for the most part is outside except on rainy or extremely cold days. Please dress your child with appropriate outerwear in the winter including hats and gloves. Indoor recess will be held in the classroom when we are unable to go out.

Materials/Uniforms
Please label your child’s name on all personal belongings. Please include names on coats, jackets, school gym sweatshirts and sweaters. A black sharpie shows up great on the inside labels.

Parent/Teacher Communication
Each Friday you will receive a first grade newsletter. This newsletter will inform you of upcoming events/activities, reminders and information pertaining to what your child is learning that week in school. If you need to contact me you may call the school and leave a message, send a note or shoot me an email. jzawaski@stwalter.com  I will respond to you in a timely manner.

Discipline

Each student is responsible for his/her own actions in first grade. At this age the children know right from wrong and if they choose inappropriate behavior there will be a consequence for their actions. Classroom rules will be posted and reviewed each day during our morning meeting. The children will learn how and why rules keep all the children safe and happy. Since you are entrusting me with your children it is my duty to make sure all my first graders are exposed to the safest and best conducive learning environment.
*All children will start their day fresh. If a child makes a wrong choice throughout the day they will receive a warning. If a second warning is given that same day the child will turn his/her card from green to red. If a child needs a third warning the red card will be placed on my desk, all of recess will be taken away and you will be notified of the misbehavior.
At the end of the day if your child did not lose any recess time their name will go into our best behavior lottery jar. At the end of the week five names will be picked from the jar. Those students whose names are picked will visit the first grade treasure chest! The key is for the students to get their name in the lottery jar as many times in the week as they can. This betters their chance to win!

Weekly Newsletters

Classroom weekly newsletters will be distributed every Friday. Please look for these in your child's home folder, as it will contain information about topics covered that week as well as reminders, information etc., for the following week.

Grading Scales

Grading in First Grade is different from other grades.  Student do not receive letter grades such as A, B, C, D, etc.  Students in First Grade receive a G, S, or N.

G= Good
S= Satisfactory
N= Needs Improvement

Due to the fact that Science and Social Studies mostly involves class participation, every child receives a "S" as long as he/she participates in experiments and class discussions.

Just a reminder that we are on trimesters, so report cards are only given out 3 times a year.
