Junior High Expectations
Welcome | Supply List | Junior High Expectations | Class News
We are off to a great start to the year! Please continue to help them to stay organized and get homework completed on time and accurately. There are new responsibilities that come along with being in sixth grade. The students will be lunch monitors for the younger grades at some point this year. They will also have the opportunity to be on safety patrol. The sixth graders will also have a kindergarten prayer partner. It is their job to be a good role model for proper Mass behavior. We also get together with them a couple times a year for various activities.
Due to the fact that the students will be switching classes this year, organization and responsibility for getting homework in on time are of utmost importance. Please check your child’s assignment book every night to ensure all homework is complete and directions were followed.
Besides D.O.L. every morning, the students will have daily math problems to solve. These problems will help to reinforce: mastery of basic skills, word problem solving strategies, skills recently taught, mental math strategies, and writing in math. The students will usually have homework every night in math. I usually give them between ten and twenty problems. Whereas I encourage parents to help in guiding the completion of homework assignments, I would rather see mistakes being made here than on the next quiz or test. Examples and procedures can be found in their notebooks to help you check their homework. Nightly study of examples and procedures should be done by the students. Also, unless told otherwise, work should always be shown.
Language Arts will be taught in the classroom and Media Center using the text, activity book, speller, novels, and vocabulary books. We will also be working on writing beginning with writing a good junior high paragraph. Other writing assignments during the year consist of: creative writing, reflective writing, essays and a better writing papers with a purpose.
In Religion we will be using the textbook, Bible, and family life book. There will be various group projects, writing assignments, and art work incorporated into the units we will cover. Lessons on prayer, liturgical seasons, bullying, and the school liturgy theme will also be taught.
If you have any questions or comments please feel free to call the office and leave a message, or email me and I will get back to you as soon as I can. I am looking forward to sharing this year with you and your children.
